What is TTY? A TTY is a device that enables people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech-impaired to use the telephone effectively. It allows an exchange of typed messages rather than a vocal conversation, and can also be used to communicate with the hearing via a message relay operator. TTY stands for Text Telephone, or Teletypewriter for the Deaf - and is also sometimes called a TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf). TTY is the more widely accepted term, as TTYs are used by many people, not just the deaf. |
