If the last few Flaming Lips albums left a pukey taste in your mouth, their brilliant new space jam disc Embryonic is the fresh breath mint you've been waiting on for years. Clocking in at a behemoth 70-plus minutes and 18 songs, the record finds Wayne Coyne and his band of Oklahoma misfits digging into the deepest depths of their musical brains for a doozy: a brain fry of pop psychedelia alongside equal parts Mr. Roboto, jazzy funk, noisy instrumentals, unmitigated weirdness and experimental electronics. I don't think anyone saw this coming.
