As a huge TV On The Radio fan, the impulse and inclination is to want to love Rain Machine - which is TVOTR guitarist/co-vocalist Kyp Malone's first solo foray - unquestioningly and unconditionally. But this is not my child, it's his. Only he is obligated to do that. And to me this offspring, while hugely curious and confident and energetic, is a little directionless at this stage. For the most part, the big tunes just aren't here as you might expect (a notable exception being the beautiful and baring New Last Name). That said, there are the interest-peaking indie rock, soul and jazz excursions that you would expect, in a package that is warm and inviting in just about every respect.
