Patrick Watson was born in 1979 in California. His family left California and settled in the small town of Hudson, near Montreal, Canada. Watson started developing his talent as an artist. He learned to play the piano. Many years later, when he was only 16 years of age, he founded the group ska band Gangster Politics. Watson found that the group was not permitting him to utilize all of his talents, and left the group in search of new challenges.
The singer-songwriter started composing his own music using classical, pop and electronic rhythms. In 2001, the artist released his first album entitled Waterproof9. It was presented as a photo exposition photo showing deep sea marine life, photographed by one of his friends, photographer, Brigitte Henry. The great talent of the singer and pianist is evident, and Watson released the first album along with a book of photographs. The artist then started touring.
In 2002, after visiting Vietnam, the artist came back with the hope of forming a new group. He united guitarist, Simon Angell, Russian bass player, Mishka Stein and drummer, Robbie Kuster. In 2003, Patrick Watson released Just Another Ordinary Day. The album received critical acclaim and propelled Watson’s career.
Between 2004 to 2006, Patrick Watson started doing more indie-pop music. The group did many concerts along with famous artists such as Feist, James Brown and The Stills. The next album, Close to Paradise made the singer better known interntionally. The album received praise from critics and the album sold millions of copies. The singles Daydreamer and Close to Paradise, were very popular. The group started a big North American tour. In the fall 2006, Watson participated in the first edition of the Osheaga concert in Montreal. In December, the group won two awards at the MIMI Gala, which honoured new groups in Quebec, Canada. Since that time, the group has multiplied its success.
The following year, Patrick Watson went to Europe where they did shows in France, Germany and Russia. In the winter 2007, the group received a nomination for a Juno in the category Best New Group of the Year. Not long after the single The Great Escape found on the album Close to Paradise was picked for one episode on the television series, Grey’s Anatomy. During the summer the group continued their shows including the Festival d’été in Quebec City and the International Jazz Festival in Montreal. In the fall 2007, Patrick Watson performed at the Osheaga concert for the second time. The group won six awards at the GAMIQ gala honouring independent music in Quebec. In the month of October, the group Patrick Watson continued their tour in Europe and North America. The tour will terminate in December.
