Shania Twain, born Eilleen Regina Edwards, was born in Windsor, Ontario, but grew up in the small town of Timmins. When she was young, she played the guitar, and wrote songs. At a young age her parents encouraged her to perform on stage for their small community. She even played in bars after hours since she was a minor, and could not enter bars while alcohol was served.
When Twain was 21 years of age, her parents died in a car accident. Following this tragic event, she assumed responsibility for her four younger brothers. Her family situation forced her to work to support the boys. She started singing at a resort called Deerhurst, and bought a house for her family.
After three years, three of the four brothers left home, and gave Twain a bit more time to concentrate on her music. She recorded some of her songs. The label Mercury Nashville offered Twain her first record deal.
Twain’s self-titled debut album was released in 1993. It was not such a big hit in North America, however, in Europe it was greatly appreciated. Country Music Television Europe named Twain the discovery of the year.
Shortly after this album was released, Twain met someone who had a tremendous impact on her career. The renowned international producer Robert John « Mutt » Lange met Twain at the Nashville Fan Fair. This producer was behind groups such as AC/DC, Def Leppard, Foreigner, Metallica and many others.
Lange was waiting for the opportunity to produce a country music album. He saw Twain’s potential, and after listening to her music, he offered working with her on her next album. Twain and Lange met and became romantically involved. At the end of the year, they were married, and began work on Twain’s second album. The couple wrote many songs that were on the album The Woman in Me.
The Woman in Me was launched in the spring of 1995. Any Man of Mine was the first single to hit number one for the singer. The two singles If You're Not in It for Love and No One Needs to Know, followed in the same direction. By 1996, the album The Woman in Me, had sold more than 6 million copies. The album won a Grammy Award for Best Country Album.
In 1997, Twain released another album called Come On Over. Twain is known to be a great stage performer, and spent two years on tour. At the end of 1999, Come on Over had sold more than 36 million copies around the world. Twain won four awards at the American Music Awards.
After many years touring, writing and recording, Twain decided to take some time away from the music scene. She and her husband retreated to their residence in Switzerland. On August 21, she gave birth to a boy named Eja. She made a comeback with her fourth album Up!. It was released in November 2002.
In 2004, the singer launched an album with her best hits.
Around this time, her hometown, Timmins, did a tribute to the star, by naming a museum after her. In 2004, Twain’s career went to greater heights when her album Come on Over went double diamond in North America. In 2005, the soundtrack for the television show Desperate Housewives was released.

All right, classic rockers to this side of the room, the rest of you, subscribe to NME. The mag trashes Wolfmother - who, granted, sound like old-school Black Sabbath and Led Zep - as "Australian mock-rockers." Fans were worried that Wolfmother would self-destruct with the 2008 departure of bassist and keyboardist Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett.
