Kalan Porter, was born on November 11, 1985 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He was immersed in music while he was growing up. At the age of 10, he did singing lessons. He also learned about classical music, took violin and piano lessons and participated in many concerts. He was part of a group called Swass, which consisted primarily of family members.
Porter studied at Medecine Hat College, but continued to develop his musical abilities. He tried out his luck at the reality television show Canadian Idol and was crowned “Idol” in 2004.
After winning, the artist did not waste any time making his own music. He launched his first single Awake In A Dream, which referred to his own dream becoming a reality. The song was at the top of the charts in Canada for almost three months, and was certified platinum 8x, only one month after its release.
Porter had signed a recording contract with Sony/BMG and in November 2004, released his first album 219 Days. The title referred to the time it took for him to go from being unknown to becoming a star. The album was certified double platinum and he started touring internationally in 2005. The same year he won an award at the Much Music Video Awards for Canadian Artist of the Year. He also won a Juno award in 2006 in the categories: Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Most Popular Album of the Year.
The young singer was really enthusiastic about doing a second album, but was devastated when he learned that his mother had breast cancer at the beginning of 2006. He had a hard time concentrating on his music. He went back home to support his mother hoping his fans would understand.
He started working on his second album in spite of his preoccupations. He created a blog called Kalan’s Awkward Video, so that his fans could follow the development of his music. Much to Porter’s surprise, this video became the sixth most watched video in its category on YouTube.com. This gave him confidence to carry on since he felt supported by his fans.
Each step in the creation of this latest album was more or less trying for Porter. The timid artist needed to expose his emotional side. In August 2007, the track Wake Up Living was released. The album was mixed and produced by Brian Malouf, who has also worked with Madonna and Michael Jackson.

Scorpians are of a utopian nature. They want to live in a world filled with honest and simple people. Their idealization of life makes them complex and mysterious. They like to be respected, and do not show their emotions easily since they don’t want to seem vulnerable. They are sensitive and affectionate. Their feelings are very powerful, but they usually keep it inside. However, if they love someone, they invest their body and soul.
All right, classic rockers to this side of the room, the rest of you, subscribe to NME. The mag trashes Wolfmother - who, granted, sound like old-school Black Sabbath and Led Zep - as "Australian mock-rockers." Fans were worried that Wolfmother would self-destruct with the 2008 departure of bassist and keyboardist Chris Ross and drummer Myles Heskett.
