frequently asked questions for maps & directions

How do I enter an address?

Enter your house or building number (suite or apartment numbers are not necessary), street and city. Please ensure that you do not include any periods or dashes in the address.

Numeric suffixes (1st, 8th), direction (N, S, E, W) and street types (Rd, Ave, St, Blvd) are important. For rural areas try it without numeric suffixes if you are having a problem. Include the postal code to improve the mapping query.

Intersections: To map an intersection use the word "and" or the ampersand ("&") or the word "at". Examples: "First & Broadway" or "Main and First" or "Smith Road at Blake St."

Highways: To map a highway, spell out the word "highway" completely. Some abbreviations may not be accepted.

North & South: Within addresses, north and south may be abbreviated "N" and "S." The abbreviations "No." and "So." are not accepted.

Suites & Apartment Numbers: MapQuest does not recognize suite numbers, unit numbers, or apartment numbers so it is best to omit them when entering addresses.

My address cannot be found.

There are a few reasons this could happen. Your address could be newer than the last update to the mapping database. You may have entered the information in a way that the MapQuest doesn't understand. Check if you have followed the instructions in the FAQ How do I enter an address?. If you still cannot find your address, please fill out this MapQuest form.

I cannot find the directions I need.

Directions are based on available MapQuest data. First, try entering the information differently. For instance, exclude apartment or unit numbers. Read the FAQ How do I enter my address? for more examples. If your results still appear to be wrong, please fill out this MapQuest form.

Your fastest directions appear to send me on a much longer trip than is necessary.

This is a challenging aspect of all mapping technologies. The fastest path is based upon several attributes:

  • spans of bridges,
  • the speed limit(s),
  • number of lanes,
  • traffic lights and signs,
  • number of turns

If your results appear wrong, please fill out this MapQuest form.

The address shown is not at the location of the map.

There may be some discrepancies in actual location; roughly speaking, addresses are mapped to about a 1/2 block of their actual physical location. If you encounter an error in the data, please report your findings to MapQuest.

Tip: If your starting location or destination does not appear to be correct, try entering the closest intersection (for example, First Ave & Main St).

The streets/signs on the map are not there or have changed.

Municipalities occasionally change street access and signs. If you encounter an error in the data, please report your findings to MapQuest.

Postal Code mapping and directions are not working.

Where possible, please use block numbers and streets to improve the mapping query.
